Shooting at Howe Park Injures Multiple Gunshot Victims in Arden-Arcade Sacramento
Sacramento authorities are working a shooting that broke out Saturday night April 18 at Howe Park while Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dispersing a large unauthorized gathering of multiple hundreds of people.
How It Started
Deputies initially got calls about Howe Community Park around 6:30 in the evening after getting calls of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Soon after, a second call came in about a possible physical fight happening at the location.
An overhead unit was sent to survey the area but could not confirm any ongoing fight. However, deputies found that an enormous crowd had gathered without authorization without official sanction.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Responding units worked to disperse the crowd by positioning themselves around the crowd and announcing over their public address systems instructing the hundreds present to vacate the area. Around 15 minutes were allowed for attendees to disperse.
While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that between 20 and 25 rounds echoed through the night. The rapid succession of shots caused mass panic. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies quickly moved to locating gunshot victims.
Four Victims Cottage Way shooting Sacramento Hospitalized
By the time the scene was secured, four individuals were identified as having gunshot wounds. Those injured — consisting of one woman and three men ranging in age through their in their twenties — were airlifted or driven to Sacramento area hospitals. Doctors and nurses reported that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one had injuries classified as minor. In a positive development, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
Sacramento Metro Fire provided support and provided medical assistance those with gunshot wounds on location.
Crime Scene Evidence
The center of the incident was determined to have been concentrated along Cottage Way near the local Home Depot situated at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Crime scene investigators discovered extra shell casings along Cottage Way. Projectile impacts were discovered in the iron fence alongside the nearby Home Depot. These discoveries confirmed that one of the gunmen had been firing southward from the Cottage Way area targeting the Home Depot. The nearby Home Depot was temporarily locked down as a precaution. CSI units alongside detectives stayed at the location through the early morning hours.
Suspect Vehicle Located
Details gathered via scanner audio showed that a vehicle identified as a Kia was contacted by law enforcement in Solano County California. Four individuals were detained. Deputies were traveling to Solano County to transport the detainees for investigation. Video evidence revealed that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
